ICM Public Lectures 2010

‘Celebrating God in Daily Life’ is a series of four public talks which addresses the challenges Christians face in living out the spiritual life in a secular world in light of the dynamics of the home and the marketplace. Is it possible to remain attentive to God in daily life? And how do we do that? How do we respond to His call and invitations to us where we are and whatever our season of life is? Set aside these evenings as we interact with Scripture, reflect on the questions of the soul and listen to the personal stories from a team of downto-earth Christian men and women from various professions and backgrounds. They are Christians who themselves are also learning to integrate faith in life and to be faithful to God where He has called them.

SPEAKERS' PROFILE

DR HERBERT TAN
Herbert believes in the incarnational model of ministry and willingly embraces others’ description of him as ‘a teenager trapped in the body of an older adult.’ He loves engaging in creative activities that mirror the image of God and in helping others pursue growth. His most memorable God-graced achievement was completing graduate studies despite his disinclination towards academics. Trained in Christian Education and theology, Herbert has ministered in pastoral, youth and family ministries in the US and South East Asia. He is currently the Director of Family Ministries at Emmanuel Methodist Church, PJ. He and his wife, Ling Ming, have two children.

DR GOH CHEE LEONG
Chee Leong serves as the Vice - President of HELP University College and the Dean of the Faculty of Behavioral Sciences where he lectures in psychology. He is project leader of several UNICEF intervention programmes in Malaysia, including a project in Tsunamiaffected communities in Kedah, a bully prevention intervention programme for Malaysian schools, and the development of a national child trauma response team. A columnist for Parenthood magazine, he has a research interest in Asian parenting styles. Chee Leong is married to Pei Shee and they have two young children. They worship at Whispering Hope.

L.T. JEYACHANDRAN
L.T. hails from Tamil Nadu in South India. Trained in engineering, he worked in India for 28 years as a Senior Civil Engineer with the Central Government before retiring and joining the Ravi Zacharias International Ministries in India. L.T. discovered the meaning of new life in Jesus Christ during his college days and has been involved in preaching the gospel ever since. A well-known Bible expositor and keen student of theology and comparative religions, L.T. is currently the Executive Director of the RZIM Asia-Pacific in Singapore. He and his wife, Esther, have two children and four grandchildren.

HELEN READ
Helen is known by her colleagues and friends as a no-nonsense and compassionate person. God, family and people rank high on her priority care list, hence carving out time intentionally to meet up with people over tea and lunches is what gives her energy and joy.
Other than the opening of her first fashion retail shop in Malaysia, she considers becoming a mother as her most memorable achievement in life. Helen is the Managing Director of Ms READ and the Director of The Delicious Group. She is married to Edmund Read and they have three children. They worship and serve at Calvary Church.

DR VASANTHA MATHEWS
Vasantha is a pediatrician by profession and has her own practice after retiring from government service. A constant juggling of work and family, and coping with frequent transfers to different parts of the country provided opportunities and challenges that have enriched her life and outlook. These experiences have taught her valuable lessons, particularly that of depending on God for everything. Badminton and gardening were her interests but now she has hung up her racket and concentrates on gardening and walking instead. Vasantha and her husband, Alex, have 2 children and 4 grandchildren whom they adore.

ALVIN UNG
Alvin sees himself as a companion of Jesus, a husband, father and friend. His aspiration is to ‘love Jesus until his dying breath.’ He recharges by taking long walks with his wife, having heartfelt conversations with friends and creating time for silence and solitude. Realising he has an ‘inner life,’ that there is a whole new way of living besides trying ‘to get things done’ for God is his most memorable ‘achievement.’ Trained in English Literature, writing and theology, Alvin has worked in education, journalism, telecommunications and leadership development and is currently a Research Fellow with Khazanah Nasional. He and Huey Fern are parents to baby Andrew.

REV DR CHEW TOW YOW
Dr Chew prefers to be known as Brother Chew. He considers himself ‘a regular guy’ who, by God’s grace, is still able to ‘move and have my being.’ Besides loving solitary walks and flying birds, he is energized by a baby’s smile and his wife’s Essence of Chicken! His ‘greatest achievement’ is being alive and having something worthwhile to do even at seventy-four. He first served the government in the teaching vocation and then the church for the past fifty years. A retired Minister now, he is grateful that he is still able to serve as a retreat leader and a Bible teacher. Married to Jee Juan, they have two daughters and a granddaughter.

REV DR ONG HWAI TEIK
Rev Ong is passionate about wanting to cultivate intimacy with God and is especially interested in helping others journey close to the Lord in their daily life. God’s steadfast love has enabled him to come this far, including having been a pastor of four churches, serving as the President of TRAC, enjoying the close bonds of a loving family, and receiving training in various theological institutions including his Doctor of Ministry programme at Asbury Theological Seminary, USA. Rev Ong is married to Mun Kean and they have a daughter, Hannah, who is in college.
